Maas
September 11, 2006
On behalf of MAAS, Prof. M. Afzal, the joint Secretary, welcomed the august audience and for their benefit, he briefly summarized the principles that MAAS stood for. He said that one of the main objectives of MAAS was to encourage scientific learning in an Islamic perspective; in other words to inculcate values to scientific studies. MAAS has strived hard so that Muslims realize the importance of scientific education and the fact that they have a role to play in the overall development of the nation and are not mere spectators. MAAS is trying to assure the world at large that Muslim scientists are sufficiently prepared for ‘value-based’ science, a term that need to be defined and understood. To achieve this, MAAS has been encouraging scientists and students alike by offering scholarships and awards, organizing Seminars/training-courses/workshops/orientation programs etc. Since its’ inception in 1983, MAAS has slowly and steadily grown. The construction of the library was made possible by the generous financial support from Dr. Majeed, a scientist cum entrepreneur who has pioneered the techniques to produce nutraceuticals. He expressed gratitude for the encouragement thus provided by him. Dr. M.Z. Kirmani; the Founder Secretary and Chairman MAAS council of Research and Academic Affairs(CARA), noted the fact that in another couple of years(2008) MAAS would have completed 25 glorious years of service, thus it looked forward to a silver jubilee celebration. The Founder Secretary reminisced about how MAAS came into being, about the difficult decision he had to take of leaving academic career.
The Chief guest, Dr.Majeed, said that it was his desire to see his money well-spent to promote education amongst Muslims. Undoubtedly there a large number of underprivileged young Muslim boys and girls. Having also experienced the lows in life, Dr. Majeed said that he knew the impact poverty can have on one’s life; hence he expected MAAS to assest him in helping such Muslims. Mr. Jaffer from Quilone (Kerala) and Maulana Zaheer A.Siddiqi from Lacknow also spoke on the occasion.
Prof.Akheel A. Syed, President, MAAS sought to point out the root problems beseeching the Muslim community: be it a low level of education or lack of confidence or lack of socio-political awareness. He reiterated that we have a look back at the message revealed fourteen hundred years ago and deal with present day problems in a new perspective.
He reasoned that since intellectuals have drawn away from the common man, the need of the hour is to bridge the gap between them and the best solution is to change the mind set of the common man and improve the quality of education that in turn demands consistency and hard work. We must be the knowledge workers within a knowledge society. We have to work with the limited resource, bring laurels to the community and inculcate a sense of confidence and pride. With this particular objective, he expressed his desire t rejuvenate MAAS and thanked Dr. Majeed again for his kind gesture that had helped MAAS in moving a step ahead while the ceremony come to its close.
